The 2011 Gardeing Season has officially begun

Top field Cool Season crop of several cabbage varieties, Broccoli, Cauliflower, spinach, catnip, white and red onions, among others. Soil has been amended with Bio-char, chicken manure, and compost as well as organic fertilizers.

The process of creating Bio-char which becomes like little life rafts for beneficial micro-organisms within a garden. The charcoal will also purify water and hold and keep nutrients within the soil which would otherwise be washed away. Plus, 1000 years from now, the Bio-char will still be in the soil doing its thing!

Terraced gardening on a slope. This area will have the 3 sisters of the Indians; Corn, Pole beans and Pumpkin or squash. The pole beans grow up the stalks of the corn while the pumpkin leaves form a natural living mulch that keeps the direct sunlight off of the roots. This area will also have Sunflowers galore. We are creating Bio-char here too.
